Wilderness Bound arrives September 15

Wilderness Bound is Minecraft's third game drop of 2026 and launches on September 15. The Java Edition release is version 26.3, with the Java Team publishing Release Candidate 2 on September 11 and stating that it would become the full release if no critical issues were found.

The update is built around outdoor exploration, camping and new building materials. Its main additions include the Dappled Forest, Abandoned Camps, poplar trees, Shelf Mushrooms, Straw Beds, Cushions, new Explorer Maps and expanded wool and concrete block families.

The Dappled Forest adds a new Overworld biome

The Dappled Forest is the central location of Wilderness Bound. It generates near cold biomes and is filled with new poplar trees, including fallen trees and three leaf colors: red, orange and yellow. Each poplar color also uses matching falling leaf particles.

Poplar Leaves can drop Poplar Saplings, and a sapling can grow into any of the three leaf color variants. Poplar Logs form a complete new wood set for building. Shelf Mushrooms and Leaf Litter generate on and around the trees, while Red Shrubs appear in patches across the biome.

  • Poplar trees come with red, orange and yellow leaf variants.
  • Fallen poplar trees can generate naturally.
  • Shelf Mushrooms grow on both standing and fallen poplar trees.
  • Red Shrubs provide another decorative plant for the biome.
  • Sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits and foxes can spawn there, using cold variants where applicable.

Abandoned Camps turn exploration into a trail of discoveries

Abandoned Camps are new structures found across a wide selection of Overworld biomes. Each supported biome has a camp variant designed for that environment, while chests and barrels provide loot for players who investigate the site.

Later 26.3 testing expanded the camps with Explorer Maps. These maps can point toward other Abandoned Camps and a range of existing structures, giving a discovered camp the potential to lead directly into another expedition.

Explorer Maps are also treated as their own map items in 26.3 rather than simply being renamed Filled Maps. The update gives different map types their own icons and preserves their specific destination type when maps are copied.

Straw Beds are built for temporary camps

The Straw Bed changes how sleeping works during long trips. Using one skips the night without resetting the player's spawn point, so an expedition does not have to overwrite the spawn location established at a permanent base.

Three Hay Bales craft four Straw Beds. Each bed is single use and is destroyed after sleeping in it. A Straw Bed also cannot be used for sleeping in the Nether or The End and will be destroyed if a player attempts to use it there.

Straw Beds can also appear in Abandoned Camps, connecting the new structure directly to the camping system introduced by the drop.

Cushions add sitting and more wool construction options

Cushions introduce a direct sitting interaction. They can be placed on flat surfaces and interacted with to sit down, making them suited to camps, interiors and gathering spaces.

There are 16 Cushion color variants. A Cushion is crafted from three Wool Slabs of the same color, which links the item to another major building addition in Wilderness Bound. Every colored Wool block now has matching stair and slab variants.

Wool Stairs and Wool Slabs retain wool's vibration dampening behavior, so the new shapes are not only decorative. They can also be used in builds where wool's interaction with vibrations matters.

Concrete gets stairs and slabs in all 16 colors

Wilderness Bound also expands concrete construction. Concrete Stairs and Concrete Slabs are available for all 16 concrete colors, filling two building shapes that were previously missing from the material set.

Together with the new Poplar wood family and expanded Wool blocks, the concrete additions give the drop a substantial building component alongside its exploration features. A player can find a Dappled Forest, collect Poplar wood, explore an Abandoned Camp and then use the update's new block shapes and camping items to establish a base in the same region.

Shelf Mushrooms add movement and crafting utility

Shelf Mushrooms generate on poplar trees and fallen poplar trees in the Dappled Forest. They appear in small and large forms, and Bone Meal can grow a small Shelf Mushroom into its larger form.

A large Shelf Mushroom drops two Shelf Mushroom items when broken. The mushrooms can be used in stew recipes and can also appear in Wandering Trader trades. Their other distinctive property is a small amount of bounciness when something lands on them, creating another movement surface inside the forest.

The release covers Java Edition and Bedrock Edition

The Wilderness Bound announcement identifies the game drop as content for both Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and Minecraft: Java Edition. Version 26.3 is the Java Edition release number confirmed through the September 11 Release Candidate.

The September 15 launch brings together features that were tested across Java snapshots and Bedrock previews during development. The final drop centers those additions around one exploration loop: find the Dappled Forest, investigate its camps and maps, travel farther into the Overworld, then use the new camping and building pieces to establish a place to stay.
