Minecraft
Minecraft is a premium sandbox survival game developed by Mojang Studios and published by Xbox Game Studios. Players take on a customizable character exploring, gathering resources, and building within a procedurally generated 3D voxel world, alone or with friends. Progression centers on collecting better materials and crafting stronger tools and gear, with optional milestones such as defeating the Ender Dragon rather than a fixed ending. Its defining gameplay centers on completely open-ended building and terrain modification, letting players reshape an infinite block-based world however they choose.

Latest update
Minecraft's current major content drop is Chaos Cubed, released June 16, 2026 as Java Edition 26.2 and Bedrock Edition 26.30. It added sulfur caves, a block-absorbing sulfur cube mob, new sulfur and cinnabar building blocks, geysers, and a Bounce music disc. Both editions have continued receiving smaller bug-fix updates since, including Bedrock Edition 26.40, while Java Edition snapshots are testing the next seasonal drop.
Release date and status
Minecraft's original PC version reached its full 1.0 release on November 18, 2011, and the game has remained continuously supported since. A native Nintendo Switch 2 version arrives separately on October 27, 2026, adding optimized performance and the Vibrant Visuals graphics mode on top of the existing Nintendo Switch release that already runs on the newer console through backward compatibility.

Platforms and availability
Minecraft is available on PC, Mac, Android, iOS / iPadOS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch, with a native Nintendo Switch 2 release following in October 2026. Bedrock Edition supports cross-play between Windows, Xbox, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and mobile, while Java Edition cross-plays only across Windows, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform subscription such as Xbox Game Pass Core or Ultimate, or PlayStation Plus, sold separately.
Gameplay and setting
Minecraft is a first-person sandbox built around gathering resources, crafting, and shaping an infinite, procedurally generated world of one-block-cube terrain. Survival mode asks players to manage hunger and health while fending off hostile mobs like the Creeper and Enderman, especially after dark, while Creative mode removes those limits for unrestricted building. Redstone powers the game's logic and automation systems, letting players build anything from simple doors to complex machines. Beyond the Overworld, players can travel through portals to the Nether and the End, the latter home to the optional Ender Dragon boss fight. Multiplayer play works through locally hosted worlds, player-run servers, or Mojang-hosted Realms.
Trailer, screenshots, and media
The trailer and gallery above show Minecraft's core loops of building, biome exploration, night-time survival against hostile mobs, cross-platform co-op through the Nether, and both Survival and Creative modes in action.
Developer and publisher
Mojang Studios develops Minecraft, with Xbox Game Studios, part of Microsoft, publishing the game following Microsoft's 2014 acquisition of Mojang. Mojang continues to lead ongoing content drops and live updates across both Java and Bedrock Edition from its Stockholm and Redmond studios.
