Honkai: Star Rail is a free-to-play turn-based space fantasy RPG about traveling between worlds aboard the Astral Express. Players explore new civilizations, follow a story centered on mysterious disasters linked to powerful objects called Stellarons, and build teams of characters for strategic battles. Combat is turn-based, so players choose attacks and abilities, match their lineup to enemy weaknesses, and combine different character roles instead of relying on real-time action. Between battles, the game includes story exploration, puzzles, management and simulation modes, and long-term character progression while its continuing story introduces new destinations and chapters.

Latest update
Version 4.5 "To Roll the Stars in Astropolis" is the current live version of Honkai: Star Rail. It launched on August 26, 2026 and runs until September 28, 2026. The update adds the Astropolis story, Robin • Summeretto and Aventurine • Waveflair, new areas including Astropolis Central District, Lodestar Tower, and Skycall Aery, plus the Dialogue Speed-Up feature for supported story content.
Release date and status
Honkai: Star Rail launched on Windows PC, Android, iPhone, and iPad on April 26, 2023. The PlayStation 5 version followed on October 11, 2023, creating the current native platform lineup.

Platforms and availability
The native game is supported on Windows PC, Android, iOS / iPadOS, and PlayStation 5. PC players can use HoYoverse's own distribution or Epic Games Store, while the mobile versions use Google Play and the App Store and the console version uses PlayStation Store.
HoYoverse also supports Honkai: Star Rail through NVIDIA GeForce NOW on Windows PC, Mac, and Chromebook. This is a cloud-gaming access route rather than a native Mac or ChromeOS release.
Gameplay and setting
Honkai: Star Rail uses turn-based battles built around four-character teams. Characters act according to turn order and use Basic ATKs, Skills, Ultimates, Talents, and other mechanics while the party manages shared Skill Points. Enemies have elemental weaknesses and a Toughness meter, allowing teams to trigger Weakness Break effects by attacking with matching elements.
Characters follow combat Paths such as Destruction, The Hunt, Erudition, Harmony, Nihility, Preservation, Abundance, Remembrance, and Elation. Team building also involves seven combat elements, character Traces, Eidolons, Light Cones, Relics, and Planar Ornaments, giving each unit several interconnected progression and build systems.
The player controls the Trailblazer, who carries a Stellaron and travels with the Astral Express crew between civilizations connected to the mysterious Aeons. Major destinations include Herta Space Station, Jarilo-VI and Belobog, the Xianzhou Luofu, Penacony, Amphoreus, and Planarcadia.
Outside story exploration and conventional encounters, permanent challenge and simulation content includes Simulated Universe, Divergent Universe, Forgotten Hall, Memory of Chaos, Pure Fiction, and Apocalyptic Shadow. Progression and character acquisition use currencies and resources including Stellar Jade, Star Rail Passes, Trailblaze Power, Credits, and Oneiric Shards.

The selected media combines the official "Interstellar Journey" release trailer with images showing Himeko • Nova, turn-based battles, Rin Tohsaka, Gilgamesh, character scenes, and Planarcadia environments.
