Genshin Impact is a free-to-play open-world action RPG developed by miHoYo and published globally by HoYoverse. Players choose Aether or Lumine as the Traveler, an otherworldly twin separated from their sibling after arriving in Teyvat. The Traveler journeys across Teyvat with Paimon to reunite with the missing sibling and uncover the truth behind the world and its gods. Its defining combat system lets four-character parties switch in real time and combine seven elements to trigger reactions.

Latest update
Version 7.0 "Everwinter Without Mercy" launched on August 12, 2026. The update opens Snezhnaya as the newest major nation to explore, adds Odette and Alyosha to the playable roster, introduces the Stellar Swirl elemental reaction, and adds the Eye of Graeae for exploration and Prime Ice interactions. The update also begins the Snezhnaya Archon Quest chapter and expands Miliastra Wonderland with additional Manekin cosmetics and a new Lobby.
Release date and status
Genshin Impact originally launched on September 28, 2020 for PC, Android, iOS, and PlayStation 4. The native PlayStation 5 version followed on April 28, 2021, and Xbox Series X/S joined the active platform lineup on November 20, 2024. PlayStation 4 stopped receiving new content updates on April 8, 2026, so the current supported console versions are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Platforms and availability
The current game supports Windows PC, Android, iPhone and iPad, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. PC players can use HoYoverse's official client or Epic Games Store, while Google Play also lists Windows availability through its PC ecosystem. Mobile versions are distributed through Google Play and Apple's App Store, and console players use PlayStation Store or Xbox Store. Cross-save allows the same HoYoverse Account to carry compatible progress across the active platforms.
Gameplay and setting
Genshin Impact combines open-world exploration with real-time party combat built around seven elements. Players assemble parties of up to four characters, switch between them during combat, and combine Anemo, Geo, Electro, Dendro, Hydro, Pyro, and Cryo to trigger reactions that affect damage, crowd control, and team strategy. Exploration includes climbing, gliding, swimming, puzzles, quests, Domains, bosses, material gathering, and regional progression, while longer-term activities include Spiral Abyss, Imaginarium Theater, Stygian Onslaught, Genius Invokation TCG, Serenitea Pot, and Miliastra Wonderland. Character and weapon acquisition also uses the Wish system, with Primogems and Fates forming the main acquisition resources. The story follows the Traveler and Paimon across Teyvat's nations in search of the Traveler's missing sibling while uncovering the histories of the Archons, Fatui, Abyss Order, Celestia, and Khaenri'ah.
