Echoes of Aincrad
Echoes of Aincrad is a single-player action JRPG set at the beginning of the Sword Art Online death game inside the floating castle of Aincrad. Instead of controlling Kirito, you create your own avatar and experience a separate story as one of the players trapped in the VRMMORPG, meeting both original characters and familiar faces from the series. Combat takes place in real time using weapon-specific attacks, dodges, parries, Sword Skills, stamina management, and coordinated actions with an AI partner. Progress comes from completing quests, exploring new areas, developing your character, crafting and improving equipment, mastering weapons, and surviving increasingly dangerous monsters and bosses.

Platforms and availability
Echoes of Aincrad is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The PC edition is distributed through Steam, while the console versions are available through PlayStation Store and Xbox Store. Bandai Namco also sells physical console editions through its official store in supported markets.

Gameplay and setting
Echoes of Aincrad begins during the early days of the Sword Art Online VRMMORPG. After the virtual world becomes a death game where in-game death means death in reality, the player's custom avatar leaves the Town of Beginnings and joins the effort to survive and clear Aincrad. The story follows its own protagonist and original characters while also crossing paths with familiar Sword Art Online figures including Kirito, Asuna, Argo, Agil, Klein, Lisbeth, and Silica.
The game follows a quest-based action RPG structure. Each quest sends the player into fields, towns, ruins, or dungeons where unexplored areas must be mapped, obstacles can reveal alternate routes, treasure can be discovered, and bosses can block further progression. Sealing Barriers are linked to Arks, while Survey Flags, side-quest clues, destructible blockers, and Magical Bridges provide additional exploration objectives.
Combat takes place in real time using normal attacks, heavy attacks, special attacks, dodges, parries, stamina, SP, and Sword Skills. Weapons function as the foundation of a build, with sword and shield, dagger, mace, rapier, two-handed sword, and two-handed axe options offering different move sets and tactical strengths. Weapon use earns proficiency, while Smithies can craft and upgrade equipment and combine compatible weapons to customize EX-MOD effects.
Character growth also uses levels, Growth Points, statistics, equipment, and Cardinal Rank. Before a quest, the player selects an AI partner whose fixed skills and equipment can complement the chosen build. Combination Skills allow the protagonist and partner to attack together, Support Skills provide additional assistance, and tactical settings such as Switch Mode and Free Mode determine how the pair divides attention between enemies.
