Gameplay and setting
Metaphor: ReFantazio takes place in the United Kingdom of Euchronia after the king is assassinated and a form of Royal Magic begins a public contest to choose the next ruler. The protagonist and his fairy companion Gallica enter this Royal Tournament while traveling across the kingdom to find a way to break the curse placed on the missing prince.
Combat combines direct real-time attacks in the field with turn-based party battles. Characters awaken Archetypes, magical powers that function like job classes, and these can be ranked up, combined across the party, and developed through skills gained from relationships with Followers. Travel takes place aboard a gauntlet runner, which acts as a moving base while the party crosses the kingdom.
Outside battle, time is a limited resource. Days can be spent exploring dungeons, completing quests, hunting treasure, traveling, and taking part in activities, while relationships and personal virtues can be developed between major objectives. Those choices make the calendar, party development, and social progression part of the same long-term journey toward the throne.
