Square Enix's current platform update notices include Nintendo Switch 2 Version 1.0.3, which fixes an issue that could prevent controls from functioning correctly in certain minigames when gyroscope controls were enabled and also improves overall game stability. A separate Windows Version 1.1 update corrects the default anti-aliasing setting when graphics presets are changed on systems using AMD Radeon or Intel Arc graphics hardware.

A broader update released alongside the June 2026 platform expansion brought Streamlined Progression and New Game - Head Start to PlayStation 5, Steam, and Epic Games Store. Streamlined Progression provides optional assistance settings such as unlimited HP and MP, 9,999 damage during battles and minigames, and maximum quantities of many items. New Game - Head Start begins a new playthrough with level 65 characters and enhanced materia, while the PC version also gained AMD FSR upscaling support.

FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH continues after Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Aerith, and Red XIII escape Midgar and begin pursuing Sephiroth across the planet. Their journey moves through multiple regions including the Grasslands, Junon, Corel, Gongaga, Cosmo Canyon, and Nibel, while additional characters such as Yuffie and Cait Sith join the playable party. The story is the middle chapter of the three-part FINAL FANTASY VII remake project and leads toward the Forgotten Capital.

Combat blends direct action with tactical command selection. Players can attack, guard, dodge, switch between party members, build ATB charges, cast magic through materia, use character abilities, summon powerful creatures, and unleash Limit Breaks. Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities let pairs of party members perform coordinated actions, giving party composition and character relationships a larger role in battle.

Exploration takes place across large interconnected regional spaces containing towns, wilderness, dungeons, side quests, hidden locations, combat encounters, and World Intel activities. Chocobos have region-specific traversal abilities, while vehicles such as the buggy and Tiny Bronco expand movement later in the adventure. Side activities range from combat challenges and treasure hunting to Queen's Blood, Chocobo Racing, G-Bike, 3D Brawler, Fort Condor, and other minigames spread throughout the world.

Character progression uses levels, equipment, weapon abilities, materia, folios, skill cores, party development, and relationship systems. Multiple difficulty settings are available, including Dynamic difficulty, and later progression opens additional challenges and Hard Mode content.
