PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is a free-to-play battle royale in which up to 100 players enter a large map and compete to be the last survivor or squad. After parachuting from a transport plane, players search buildings and terrain for firearms, armor, healing supplies, attachments, and vehicles, then reposition as the Blue Zone, a damaging field that steadily shrinks the safe play area, closes in. Matches support solo, duo, and four-player squad play, with combat shaped by weapon recoil, bullet travel, cover, vehicles, and tactical movement. Winning the final fight earns the series' familiar "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner" victory message.

Update 42.3 reached PC on August 12, 2026 and consoles on August 20, 2026 after its patch notes were published on August 11. It began the first Meta Rotation with a broad light machine gun rebalance and the new RPD, added PUBG: Playgrounds on PC for selected community-created modes, introduced the POBG maintenance mini-game on PC, and expanded settings and crosshair customization.
Release date and status
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS entered Steam Early Access in March 2017 and reached its full PC release in December 2017. The Xbox One version reached full 1.0 release on September 4, 2018, followed by PlayStation 4 on December 7, 2018. The game changed to free-to-play on January 12, 2022. Console service moved to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 13, 2025, and the former PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions are no longer downloadable or playable.

Platforms and availability
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is available on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, on PlayStation 5 through the PlayStation Store, and on Xbox Series X/S through the Xbox Store. The base game is free to play, with optional in-game purchases and the BATTLEGROUNDS Plus account upgrade.
Console graphics options were expanded with Update 42.2. Xbox Series S supports up to 1080p at 120 fps in Frame Rate Priority or 1440p at 60 fps in Resolution Priority. Xbox Series X supports up to 1440p at 120 fps or 2160p at 60 fps, PlayStation 5 supports up to 1440p at 120 fps or 1800p at 60 fps, and PlayStation 5 Pro supports up to 1800p at 120 fps or 2160p at 60 fps. All four console configurations use dynamic resolution scaling, and Frame Rate Priority requires a display capable of 120 Hz output.
Gameplay and setting
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS drops up to 100 players onto a large battleground from a transport plane. Players choose a landing area, parachute in, search for weapons, armor, healing supplies, attachments, and vehicles, then reposition as the damaging Blue Zone steadily shrinks the safe play area. Matches support Solo, Duo, and Squad formats, with victory going to the final surviving player or team.
Combat emphasizes firearm recoil, bullet travel, attachment choices, cover, positioning, and vehicle movement. The arsenal spans assault rifles, designated marksman rifles, sniper rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, pistols, and light machine guns, while cars, motorcycles, boats, and specialized vehicles provide faster rotations across the maps.
The permanent battleground roster includes six 8x8 km maps: Erangel, Miramar, Taego, Deston, Vikendi, and Rondo. Smaller battlegrounds include Sanhok at 4x4 km, Paramo at 3x3 km, and Karakin at 2x2 km. Karakin features the destructive Black Zone and Sticky Bomb mechanics, while the larger maps use different terrain, settlements, vehicles, and map-specific systems to change combat ranges and rotation choices.
Ranked matchmaking is available through BATTLEGROUNDS Plus after meeting its progression requirement. Arcade currently includes Team Deathmatch and Intense Battle Royale, while Custom Match and the game's user-generated-content systems provide alternative rules and player-created experiences. Progression also includes Survival Mastery, cosmetic collections, Survivor Passes, G-Coin, clans, and competitive esports systems.

Download and availability
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is free to download and play on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, and on console via the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Store for Xbox Series X/S. No purchase is required to access the base game on any platform. The optional Battlegrounds Plus upgrade is available for purchase from within the game lobby on all platforms and unlocks Ranked matchmaking, Custom Match creation, clan features, and a Survival XP boost. PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass membership is not required to play the free base game online on console, though standard platform online service requirements apply per platform policy.
