PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is a free-to-play battle royale developed by PUBG Studios and published by KRAFTON, Inc. Players parachute onto one of several large maps, scavenge for weapons, gear, and vehicles, and fight to survive as a shrinking blue zone forces encounters with other players. The main goal is to outlast all other opponents and claim the Chicken Dinner, whether playing solo, in duos, or as a squad of up to four. Its defining identity is grounded, realistic gunplay combined with tactical positioning across sprawling open-world maps that reward awareness, planning, and precise decision-making.

Latest update

Update 42.3, released August 11, 2026, launched the first Meta Rotation season, introducing the new RPD Light Machine Gun and a sweeping rebalance of the entire LMG weapon class. All LMG reload times were reduced by approximately 25 percent, and both vertical and horizontal recoil were adjusted to bring the weapon class into competitive viability. The RPD uses 7.62mm ammunition, fires in full-auto at 750 RPM, and ships with a 50-round magazine expandable to 110 rounds. The update also introduced PUBG: Playgrounds, a dedicated PC hub for browsing and queuing into community-created game modes, along with POBG, an offline mini-game available to PC players during scheduled server maintenance. Vehicle combat was rebalanced so that weapon spread and recoil increase at higher speeds, and players must fully lean out before firing. Additional changes include crosshair customization, a settings-sharing code system, improved key binding UI with new tabs, and an updated settings menu with side navigation and per-option reset buttons.

Release date and status

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS first launched on PC via Steam Early Access on March 23, 2017, and reached its full global PC release on December 20, 2017. Xbox One followed in March 2018, and PlayStation 4 in September 2018. The game became free to play on January 12, 2022, across all platforms. On November 13, 2025, console support transitioned exclusively to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S with the launch of Update 38.2, ending service on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The current-gen console launch brought native PS5 and Xbox Series X/S builds with significantly improved visuals and performance. Existing account data and purchased items carried over without any separate transfer process.

Platforms and availability

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is currently available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, and on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Both PC storefronts offer the free base game with optional in-app purchases and the paid Battlegrounds Plus upgrade. PlayStation 5 players download through the PlayStation Store; the game runs at 1440p and 60 fps natively, with PlayStation 5 Pro supporting dynamic 4K at 60 fps. Xbox Series X runs at 2160p and 60 fps, while Xbox Series S offers a choice between 1080p at 60 fps or 1440p at 30 fps. Cross-play between Steam and Epic Games Store is supported. Console and PC servers remain separate.

Gameplay and setting

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS drops up to 100 players onto a large map from a transport plane. Players choose their landing spot, parachute in, and immediately begin looting buildings for weapons, armor, backpacks, healing items, and attachments. A shrinking electrified Blue Zone progressively closes the playable area throughout the match, forcing players into closer contact and eliminating passive play. Matches can be played solo, in duos, or in squads of up to four, with first-person-only and third-person servers available depending on region and mode.

Combat in PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS emphasizes realistic ballistics, bullet drop, recoil control, and weapon attachment management. Players choose from a large arsenal of real-world firearms spanning assault rifles, designated marksman rifles, sniper rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, pistols, and light machine guns, each with distinct handling and attachment compatibility. Vehicles including cars, motorcycles, boats, and the armored BRDM provide mobility and cover across the game's large open maps.

Each of the game's maps has a distinct visual identity and strategic character. Erangel is the original 8x8 km map featuring open fields and mid-range combat. Miramar is a 8x8 km desert environment favoring long-range engagements. Sanhok is a 4x4 km dense jungle map that produces faster, closer combat. Vikendi is a snow-covered 6x6 km map. Deston is an 8x8 km urban and wetlands map. Taego features a Self-AED system and a second-chance mechanic. Rondo is the newest primary map. Karakin is a compact 2x2 km map with destructible walls and a rotating blue zone hazard.

Ranked mode requires a Battlegrounds Plus account and matches players against opponents of similar skill, with a rating system tied to survival time and placement. Arcade modes including Team Deathmatch, Intense Battle Royale, and Hot Drop Rush offer shorter, faster formats. The UGC system and PUBG: Playgrounds allow PC players to create and share custom gameplay modes. Cosmetics, seasonal Survivor Passes, and the G-Coin premium currency are available through in-game stores and live service events.

What platforms is PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS available on?
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is currently available on PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. As of November 13, 2025, support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One has ended. Existing account data and purchased items carry over automatically to current-gen consoles.
What is Battlegrounds Plus and do I need it to play?
Battlegrounds Plus is a one-time optional paid upgrade that unlocks Ranked matchmaking, a double Survival XP boost, the ability to create Custom Matches, and clan creation. The base free account gives access to all Normal Matches, Training Mode, Arcade modes, and most game content without it.
Does PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS support crossplay?
Yes. Crossplay is enabled between Steam and Epic Games Store on PC, and between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on console. PC and console servers operate separately by default; cross-platform play between PC and console is not available.
What are the current PC specifications required to run PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS?
KRAFTON officially publishes three tiers. Minimum requires Windows 10, an Intel Core i5-4430 or AMD FX-6300, 8 GB RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 2 GB or AMD Radeon R7 370 2 GB, DirectX 11, and 40 GB of storage. Recommended targets 144 fps and requires an Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600, 16 GB RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3 GB or AMD Radeon RX 580 4 GB, and 50 GB of storage. A competitive tier for high-refresh play requires an Intel Core i9-9900K or AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, 32 GB RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super or AMD Radeon RX 5700.
What is the Blue Zone in PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS?
The Blue Zone is an ever-shrinking electrified field that gradually closes in on the playable area throughout a match. Players caught outside it take continuous damage. Each match has multiple Blue Zone phases that force survivors closer together, eliminating safe camping and driving combat as the match progresses.
What is Meta Rotation and how does it affect gameplay?
Meta Rotation is PUBG Studios' long-term approach to gunplay balance, introduced with Update 42.3. Approximately every four months, a different weapon class receives significant rebalancing and potential new weapons to shift which playstyles dominate. The first Meta Rotation in August 2026 focused on Light Machine Guns, bringing the new RPD LMG and rebalancing all LMG reload times and recoil.
