Gameplay and setting
GIRLS' FRONTLINE 2: EXILIUM uses turn-based tactical combat on 3D grid maps where positioning, cover, terrain, enemy weaknesses, and battlefield mechanisms influence each encounter. Players command squads of T-Dolls through objectives such as defeating enemies, capturing positions, and surviving specialized encounters. Stability Breaks create openings against protected targets, while each Doll has distinct skills, combat roles, weapons, and passive abilities.
The expanded phase system adds Resonance damage, Phase Enhancement, Phase Resistance, upgradeable weaknesses, and Tile Transformation. Tiles with matching phase attributes can combine through Monophase Fusion, while different attributes can trigger Multiphase Fusion and create new Fusion Tiles.
Doll progression includes levels, weapons, Weapon Attachments, Neural Helix upgrades, Keys, duplicate-based strengthening, and the MOD system used to transform supported Dolls into upgraded forms. Weapons can also be visually customized with accessories.
Outside combat, the Elmo and Crew Deck provide character interaction and additional activities. Players can increase Affinity with Dolls, give gifts, interact with characters in areas such as the Refitting Room and Dormitory, and use Covenant Rings with eligible Dolls to unlock additional archives, memories, voice lines, and Covenant Projections.
Longer-term activities include Boundary Push, Artifact Recovery, Dual Randomizer, Divergent Echoes, Platoon systems, Frontier Conquest, and other challenge modes. The story follows the Commander after leaving Griffin and Kryuger and becoming a bounty hunter who travels through contaminated zones aboard the Elmo with a growing group of Tactical Dolls.
