By ·Published Aug 3, 2026·Updated Aug 20, 2026·Official sources verified

VALORANT is a free-to-play tactical first-person shooter developed and published by Riot Games. Players control Agents with distinct abilities as members of five-player attacking or defending teams. Teams fight to win rounds by eliminating opponents or completing Spike plant and defuse objectives across competitive maps. Its defining combat system pairs precise gunplay and a round-based economy with Agent abilities used to gather information, control space, block sightlines, and create openings.

Platforms and availability

PC players download VALORANT through Riot's official game site, while PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S players use their respective console storefronts. Console matchmaking connects PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S players but remains separate from the PC matchmaking pool. A Riot Account provides cross-progression and cross-inventory across the supported versions.

Gameplay and setting

VALORANT is built around round-based 5v5 tactical combat with one life per player in its core attack-and-defend format. The attacking team can plant the Spike at designated sites while defenders attempt to prevent the plant or defuse it, and both sides can also win a round by eliminating the opposing team when the situation permits. Players earn credits between rounds to purchase weapons, armor, and abilities, making economy management part of team strategy alongside aim, positioning, information gathering, and utility usage. The current Agent roster spans Duelists, Initiators, Controllers, and Sentinels, while permanent and recurring modes include Competitive, Unrated, Swiftplay, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Spike Rush, Premier, Custom Games, and additional rotating formats.

FAQ

Can VALORANT PC players play with PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S players?
No. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S players can use cross-platform matchmaking with each other, but Riot keeps console and PC matchmaking separate.
Does VALORANT progression carry between PC and consoles?
Yes. VALORANT supports cross-progression and cross-inventory through the same Riot Account, so eligible progression and owned content can follow the account between PC and console.
Is PlayStation Plus required to play VALORANT on PlayStation 5?
No. PlayStation Plus is not required to play VALORANT online, although an internet connection is required.
Is VALORANT available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One?
No. The current console version supports PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. PlayStation specifically confirms that VALORANT is not available on PlayStation 4.
Why can VALORANT fail to launch on a Windows 11 PC that meets the performance specifications?
Windows 11 systems must also have TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot enabled. These security requirements apply in addition to Riot's CPU, GPU, RAM, and operating-system specifications.
What does Xbox Game Pass provide for VALORANT?
Game Pass members can link their Xbox profile to a Riot Account to unlock all current and future Agents while using the eligible Game Pass benefit.
How is aiming different in the console version of VALORANT?
Riot built the console version around controller input rather than making a direct PC port. Focus Mode provides a lower-sensitivity aiming state intended to preserve precise tactical shooting while still allowing faster movement and turning outside that mode.
