Roblox is Roblox Corporation’s free gaming and creation platform, where players join community-made games and creators publish experiences with Roblox Studio. It is available across computers, mobile devices, PlayStation, Xbox and supported Meta Quest headsets; Roblox announced the mobile-first Build creation tab on July 16, 2026.

Roblox Corporation announced Build on July 16, 2026. The mobile-first creation tab turns a text prompt into a basic playable game inside the Roblox app, then lets a creator refine, playtest, share or publish it.

Select Build features enter public alpha in New Zealand on July 28, 2026 for age-checked users aged 9 and older. Games that pass Roblox's review can be published globally for age-checked users aged 16 and older, while the base creation tier is planned to remain free with paid power-user options later.

Release date and status

Roblox released publicly on Windows PC on September 1, 2006 and remains an actively updated platform. The iPhone and iPad app followed in December 2012, Android launched on July 16, 2014, Xbox One on January 27, 2016, PlayStation 4 on October 10, 2023, Meta Quest on September 27, 2023, and the native PlayStation 5 app on April 14, 2026.

Roblox currently supports macOS and Chrome OS, although Roblox Corporation's current support pages do not publish exact first-release dates for those clients.

Platforms and availability

Roblox is playable on Windows, macOS, supported Chromebooks, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Android, iPhone, iPad, supported Amazon Fire tablets, Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 3.

Cross-platform play connects supported desktop, mobile, console and Meta Quest users, but each community-made game can choose its own device support, controls, age access and player limits. Linux and Meta Quest 1 are not supported.

Gameplay overview

Roblox is a catalog of community-made games rather than one fixed ruleset. Players discover role-playing games, simulators, obstacle courses, shooters, racing games, survival games, tycoons and social spaces, then join public or private multiplayer servers with a customizable avatar.

Roblox Studio on Windows and Mac lets creators build and publish games, while Parties help friends enter experiences together. Age-checked accounts can use eligible text or voice communication, and individual games may sell optional items, passes, private servers or randomized rewards for Robux.

Story, setting, or main mode

Roblox has no single campaign, protagonist or world. Its main mode is discovery: each game supplies its own setting, progression and objectives, while the shared Roblox account carries the player's avatar, friends, inventory, Robux balance and safety settings between experiences.

Creation is the second half of the platform. Roblox Studio provides the full development environment on Windows and Mac, and the July 2026 Build initiative begins extending basic prompt-driven creation to the mobile Roblox app.

Developer and publisher

Roblox Corporation develops and publishes the Roblox client, Roblox Studio, Marketplace, account services and platform infrastructure. Community creators and studios separately develop the individual games available through Roblox.

Download and availability

Roblox is free to download from Roblox.com, Google Play, Apple's App Store, PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Amazon Appstore and Meta Quest Store. A network connection and a free Roblox account are required to play most games.

Optional Robux purchases fund avatar items and game-specific products. Roblox Plus launched globally on April 30, 2026 for $4.99 per month with platform discounts and benefits, while individual games can set separate paid items, subscriptions or private-server prices.

System / Device Requirements

Roblox publishes separate requirements for computers, mobile devices and Meta Quest. Performance also depends on the individual game, because creators can build experiences with very different graphics, world sizes and player counts.
