Gameplay and setting

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a third-person swordplay action game set in a dark fantasy version of Edo-period Kyoto. Players control Miyamoto Musashi, a samurai who wields the mystical Oni Gauntlet, a sentient artifact that grants superhuman strength and absorbs the souls of defeated demons. The city has been twisted by malevolent clouds of Malice, allowing the demonic Genma to invade from the underworld.

Combat centers on deliberate, timing-based swordplay. Musashi can strike, parry, deflect projectiles, and dodge to deplete enemy stamina. Once stamina is broken, he can execute a Break Issen to instantly kill regular foes or deal massive damage to bosses. Consecutive parries and dodges grant combat buffs that enable swift chain executions or multi-hit attacks. The gauntlet also provides Oni Vision to reveal hidden demons and powers Oni Armaments, magical weapons that deal heavy damage at the cost of a magic gauge filled by absorbing blue souls.

The game is largely linear with open areas and side quests. Real-life Kyoto landmarks such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Yasui Konpiragu Shrine appear as levels, and the story is standalone so newcomers can follow it without playing previous entries.
