Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a single-player swordplay action game set in an early Edo-period Kyoto transformed by supernatural Malice. Players control the samurai Miyamoto Musashi as he battles Genma, monstrous beings that have crossed into the human world, while trying to understand the path created by the mysterious Oni Gauntlet bound to him. Combat rewards carefully timed blocks, deflections, dodges, and powerful counterattacks rather than relying only on repeated sword strikes. Between battles, Musashi explores temples, streets, supernatural spaces, and wider areas of Kyoto while collecting souls that strengthen his equipment and unlock new abilities.

Gameplay and setting

Onimusha: Way of the Sword takes place in early Edo-period Kyoto, where supernatural Malice has transformed parts of the historic city and allowed monstrous Genma to enter the human world. The protagonist is Miyamoto Musashi, a samurai who arrives in Kyoto seeking to prove his skill but becomes bound to the mysterious Oni Gauntlet and drawn into the conflict against the Genma.

Sword combat combines normal attacks with carefully timed defensive techniques. Players can parry attacks, deflect blows to throw enemies off balance, dodge incoming strikes, and execute the series' powerful Issen counterattack. Musashi can also awaken supernatural Oni abilities, including powers that increase his strength and movement options. His Oni Gauntlet absorbs souls released by defeated Genma, turning them into resources that help strengthen equipment and unlock abilities.

The adventure expands beyond its opening missions into larger sections of Kyoto. Musashi explores locations including Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Kiyomizu-zaka, and Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple, while the supernatural Oni Refuge provides a more otherworldly environment. Progress can involve clearing Genma corruption and barriers to reach additional areas, finding treasures, upgrading gear, and fighting major enemies such as Sasaki Ganryu, Daidara, Rasho-gan, Byakue, and Dohatsu-ten.
