Gameplay and setting
Borderlands 4 takes place on Kairos, a hidden planet controlled for generations by the Timekeeper through cybernetic Bolts and his synthetic army, the Order. Players join resistance factions while moving through connected regions, completing story and side missions, hunting Vaults, fighting bosses, and gathering increasingly powerful weapons and equipment.
The base game features Vex the Siren, Rafa the Exo-Soldier, Amon the Forgeknight, and Harlowe the Gravitar. Each Vault Hunter has three Action Skills and branching skill trees that support multiple build directions. Story Pack 1 later added C4SH the Rogue, while Loveless the Hacker is confirmed as the next playable Vault Hunter for September 10, 2026.
Movement is more flexible than in earlier Borderlands games, with double jumping, gliding, dodging, grappling, and a summonable Digirunner used for faster travel across Kairos. Combat combines these movement options with Action Skills and an extensive weapon system built around manufacturers including Daedalus, Tediore, Maliwan, Jakobs, Vladof, and Torgue.
The Licensed Parts system allows weapons to combine characteristics associated with different manufacturers, while additional equipment categories include Ordnance, Enhancements, and Repkits. Endgame progression includes Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, Specializations, Wildcard Missions, replayable bosses through Moxxi's Big Encore, Invincible boss encounters, Takedown at Hadron Abyss, Circle of Slaughter, Vault Cards, Pearlescent gear, and Shared Character Progression.
Story Pack 2: FL4K and the Last Resort expands the game with the tropical region of Providence, where players team up with returning Beastmaster FL4K against Tediore forces led by Lieutenant Harmony. Bounty Pack 5: Amara and the Vile Shadows returns to the Phase dimension with Amara and adds another repeatable mission, new enemies, bosses, cosmetics, Legendary gear, and a Pearlescent weapon.
