World of Warcraft Classic Era is a subscription massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Players create characters from one of eight races across two warring factions, the Alliance and the Horde, and adventure through the original Azeroth as it existed before the launch of The Burning Crusade expansion. Progression centers on leveling a character from 1 to 60 across hundreds of quests, dungeons, and world events, culminating in endgame raid content including Molten Core, Blackwing Lair, Ahn'Qiraj, and Naxxramas. Its defining identity is permanence: unlike Classic progression servers that advance through expansions over time, Classic Era realms are locked indefinitely to the original vanilla rule set, giving players a stable home in 2004-era Azeroth with no scheduled content resets or expansion transitions.

The most recent system patch for WoW Classic Era is Patch 1.15.9, which Blizzard deployed during weekly maintenance the week of July 19, 2026. This patch added Edit Mode to the Classic client, allowing players to reposition and customize interface elements without relying entirely on addons. The update also introduced reworked nameplates and updated raid frames that share code with the modern Midnight client, matching changes already pushed to Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary in Patch 2.5.6. Addon authors were advised to update any addons that interact with nameplates or raid frames to maintain compatibility with the new UI layer. Blizzard continues to publish hotfix maintenance for Classic Era alongside the rest of the WoW ecosystem, with hotfixes logged as recently as August 21, 2026.
Release date and status
World of Warcraft Classic launched globally on August 26, 2019. At that time the game represented the original vanilla WoW experience at patch 1.12.1. Following the June 2021 launch of Burning Crusade Classic, all existing Classic realms were given a permanent fork choice: characters could advance to Burning Crusade Classic or remain on what became the Classic Era branch, which is the version documented here. Classic Era realms have been active and continuously maintained since that split. As of 2026, Blizzard continues to patch the game with systems updates and hotfixes, and the content is locked indefinitely at the vanilla 1-to-60 experience with no scheduled expansion progression.

Platforms and availability
WoW Classic Era is available on PC (Windows) and Mac. The game is not available on any console or mobile platform. It is accessed exclusively through the Battle.net desktop app, which must be installed and used to download and launch the game client. WoW Classic Era is installed as a separate game version within the Battle.net app and cannot be launched through Steam or any other storefront. An active WoW subscription is required before the game can be installed or played.
Gameplay and setting
WoW Classic Era recreates World of Warcraft as it existed at patch 1.12.1, commonly called vanilla WoW. Players choose a character from one of eight playable races split between the Alliance (Human, Dwarf, Gnome, Night Elf) and the Horde (Orc, Tauren, Troll, Undead), then select from nine classes including Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, Mage, Warlock, and Druid. The leveling journey from 1 to 60 is intentionally slow by design, with questing across distinct overworld zones, five-player dungeons requiring manual group formation, and a talent tree system that rewards specialization decisions early.
Endgame content at level 60 centers on 40-player raids: Molten Core, Onyxia's Lair, Blackwing Lair, Zul'Gurub, the twin Ahn'Qiraj raids, and Naxxramas. Attunement chains, consumable preparation, and coordinated raid scheduling are expected parts of the endgame culture. PvP is available through three Battlegrounds (Alterac Valley, Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin) and an open-world Honor system. The economy depends heavily on player-crafted goods and trade-skill markets, with key profession materials such as Black Lotus holding real strategic value. Two quality-of-life features added by Blizzard after the original 2019 launch are Dual Specialization, which lets players maintain two talent builds and swap between them outside combat, and a Group Finder tool to help players locate dungeon and raid groups without relying entirely on chat channels.

Download and availability
WoW Classic Era is available exclusively through Blizzard's Battle.net desktop app. Players must install the Battle.net app, create or log in to a Blizzard account, and purchase an active World of Warcraft subscription before they can install and play Classic Era. The game client for WoW Classic Era must be downloaded and installed separately within the Battle.net app; it does not share the same installation as modern World of Warcraft or other Classic versions. There is no separate box purchase or one-time fee: subscription access covers Classic Era, Hardcore, Season of Discovery, and the retail game simultaneously.
