Fable

On September 9, 2026, Xbox published a new Fable developer discussion following the gamescom demonstrations, with Playground Games detailing the quest demo, hands-on combat build, and the structure of Albion. The team described one-to-many encounters as the main combat approach, showed Bowerstone as a dense city where every building can be entered and every house can be purchased, and outlined the Hero's opening journey from Briar Hill into the wider open world.

Fable is set in a fully open-world version of Albion and follows the customizable Hero of Briar Hill, the first Hero to emerge in a generation. Combat lets players switch freely between melee weapons, ranged weapons, and magic, with encounters designed around fighting groups of enemies and choosing equipment and spells that suit different situations.

Outside combat, the Living Population system gives more than 1,000 handcrafted residents their own personalities, homes, jobs, routines, and relationships. The Hero can build friendships or romances, buy homes, own businesses, work jobs, hire residents, adjust wages and rent, and develop a reputation that affects how people respond. Choices range from small role-playing decisions to larger consequences that can shape relationships and parts of the world.
